How Sovra Works

Why does Sovra ask you to verify your identity?

Why does Sovra ask you to verify your identity?

Because some of the services connected to your wallet are regulated, and the licensed partners who run them are required by law to know who they serve. Self-custody decides who controls your money. Identity decides who can use regulated services.

If only I control my money, why do you need my ID?

Holding your own dollars requires no one's permission, and that does not change. But cards and bank transfers run through licensed financial partners, and the laws they operate under require identity checks, the same as anywhere in the world's financial system. Verification also protects you: it stops someone else from opening services in your name.

Which features need verification, and which work without it?

Creating an account takes basic information only. Holding money, earning, receiving on the network, and sending to Sovra users or wallet addresses all work without an identity check. Getting the card and sending or receiving by bank transfer require a quick check with a government ID, and the availability of those services depends on where you live. The step-by-step walkthrough is in the How to Use Sovra guides.

Who actually checks my identity, and where does my data go?

Verification is performed by the specialized identity verification providers of the licensed financial institutions that run these services. Sovra does not perform the checks itself. Your data is handled as described in the Privacy Policy: https://sovra.money/learn/transparency#privacy-policy
